Responding to Disclosures
With Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse
Tuesday, November 24th at 4 – 6
Yellow Room (Z203)
Sexual violence has one of the lowest reporting rates of any crime and one factor that may influence low reporting rates has to do with the way we, as a society, respond when someone discloses that they’ve experienced some form of sexual violence. How people respond to a disclosure has an impact on the person disclosing and whether or not they receive positive response to their disclosure can influence their healing. In this workshop participants will learn some of the factors that influence the impact of sexual violence, common reactions to sexual violence, and learn how to give an effective first response to a disclosure of sexual violence.
Please note, this is workshop does not provide or teach clinical counseling techniques. If you or someone you know is seeking professional counselling services please feel free to call CCASA’s 24-hour Support and Information line at 403.237.5888.
This is the third part of a series of workshops covering sexual violence. It is recommended that participants have attended the Sexual Assault Workshop and/or the Adults Who Have Experienced Child Sexual Abuse Workshop or have some familiarity with the issue of sexual violence, prior to attending.
This workshop is a part of SAMRU’s How to Be a Better Lover workshop series. This series focuses on introductory skill-building for students pursuing their own healthy relationships and sexuality. These workshops deliver sex-positive, pleasure-positive, inclusive, and fun sex and relationship education. Facilitated workshops will also connect participants to community leaders for additional resources and support.
