Final grade appeals come at a stressful time of the semester so let’s clear up some details to make things less stressful! To begin with: you have 20 working days from the last day of the final exam period of that particular semester, to appeal. After this time, you lose your right to appeal the final grade; don’t delay!

Final grade appeal stages are sequential and begin with you and your instructor having an informal discussion. Think about how you’ll communicate in this meeting and consider your body language, tone of voice, active-listening, and conflict resolution skills. Get some skills feedback from a friend or trusted information source before the meeting occurs.

It’s up to you to demonstrate the grounds for an appeal. Grounds are based on academic merit: the quality of your submitted work. The grounds to appeal are slightly different at each level (Instructor, Chair, & Dean Level). At the instructor level, grounds involve a potential mathematical miscalculation, or if the final grade was not calculated on all course work completed/ as listed in the course outline. The second final grade appeal level: the Chair. First, there is a form you need to fill out at the Registrar’s Office. Grounds considered here involve alleged unfair assessment (academic merit-based).

Non-academic factors in a final grade appeal are no longer grounds to appeal. However, if you feel your final grade involved something non-academic, like discrimination, the Diversity & Human Rights office could be a place to visit (U 216-C) or see the SAMRU Student Advocacy Coordinator (Z 302) to talk about your situation options. As a student, you have the right for your appeal to be heard in at least one level beyond the instructor level. There are specific grounds to a final grade appeal at the Dean Level and specific deadlines at each level of the process; contact the Student Advocacy Coordinator for more information about these.
