Are you an LGBTQ+ person or ally seeking out a supportive, welcoming space on campus? The Pride Centre in Wyckham House isn’t just a place to get free condoms and dental dams (#safersexforthewin) – it’s also the epicentre of most of SAMRU’s Relationships, Identity and Sex programming, not to mention the home of a vibrant campus community.

During Pride Week (January 30 – February 2), we celebrate that community, highlight what SAMRU has to offer in terms of education around gender and sexual diversity, bring in fabulous guest lecturers to share their expertise and, y’know…party. If you haven’t made it out to any of our Pride Centre programming like Crafternoon! or Gender Bender yet, Pride Week is the perfect time to get acquainted with them.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect from this year’s Pride Week, besides a really good time.

In this topsy-turvy world, Crafternoon! is a bastion of calm and positivity. You can find it every Monday 12:00pm – 2:00pm in the Pride Centre, where students will be making reusable sock heating pads, customized buttons, yarn art or some other crafty delight. We provide the materials and you get to take home your masterpiece – not to mention the inner peace and satisfaction that comes with Making A Thing. For Pride Week, special guests Hilary (she/her) and Jace (they/them) of Camp fYrefly will host a special Pride Week edition of Crafternoon!, guiding us through a craft of their choosing and sharing their experiences attending and volunteering at the four-day retreat for LGBTQ+ youth and allies.

Sexuality 101

Some questions about sexuality or sexual health are too complicated to Google and too weird to ask your friends or (shudder) your parents. Luckily, nothing is too weird for the Calgary Sexual Health Centre, who are joining us for a facilitated discussion on the many ways people experience, express, and explore sexuality! Want to ask a question anonymously? Leave it in the question box, which will be hanging out in the Pride Centre until January 31, and come to the session to hear your question answered.

The inimitable writer, musician, and all-around superstar Rae Spoon is visiting Wyckham House to deliver a noon hour talk on topics related to gender and sexuality…and maybe play a few of their tunes, if we ask real nice! Afterwards, join Rae for a workshop on collaborative storytelling in Council Chambers.
