We’ve all been there. Whether it’s an experience, a comment, or a person’s tone of voice; sometimes the messages we perceive and interpret from others in communications evoke unpleasant feelings. What we do with those feelings matters.
What would you do if you felt a professor said something hurtful or if you felt students in your CHEM class excluded you? These are tough scenarios. We will experience bumps in the road involving communication or conflict, and it’s ok to take some time to think before you act.
I’ve gathered some tips on communication and conflict to share. Take whatever tips you feel best address your situation.
In dealing with concerns, Stephanie Stone, Human Rights Advisor at MRU offers several helpful tips: “In my experience it is best to address misunderstandings or conflicts early, before they turn into bigger issues.” Dealing with situations proactively can help quickly find resolutions together.
However, not every situation is always easily wrapped up. In preparing to address a concern, Stephanie suggests students avoidapproaching a potential conflict with all the answers and solutions, and suggests students “be open to the ideas of others. The best solutions are usually those arrived at jointly. Asking questions of yourself and others can be an effective way to discover solutions.”
Truly, having this kind of solutions-focused perspective can help prepare you to start a conversation or meeting with productive readiness. If you’re not there yet, take some time to process your feelings and concerns before you start hiking through the rough terrain. Rushing in angry may delay or complicate communication.
