For several years, SAMRU has hosted Pride Week right here on campus through the Pride Centre (formerly known as the Diversity Centre). It is a varied week with events for the most outgoing and flamboyant celebrants, as well as activities for those who want to take the week to draw attention to issues facing the queer community. This year, Pride Centre Administrator Joshua Cadegan-Syms has a new set of activities and events to mark this special week, right before you head of for Reading Week.

“I would like to continue the discussions we already have started in the Pride Centre” began Cadegan-Syms. “This semester we will be focusing on bringing awareness to queer performing artists”. One of the highlights of Pride Week will be the appearance of Rae Spoon, a transgender Calgarian singer/songwriter currently based out of Montreal. Rae will be speaking in Wyckham House during the day and then will be following up that appearance with a set in The Hub’s weekly Live Music Tuesday showcase.

Fitting in with The Hub’s regular Thursday Student Night will be the return of the always-fabulous Gender Bender on February 14th. This variety show will include drag kings and queens along with burlesque dancers, a photo booth, and a Pride beauty pageant.

Rounding out the Pride Week activities the centre will be hosting an open house, karaoke, and a tea party. Everyone is welcome to attend any and all Pride Week events regardless of your own orientation or identification, and more information about Pride Week can be found on the Pride Centre Web page:
