The Representation Executive Council (REC) works to represent your interests to Mount Royal, all three levels of government, and beyond – but lots of that work happens outside of the public eye. We’ll be publishing monthly newsletters from your REC to keep you informed and to give you a peek at what your student reps are working on behind the scenes.

Thank you to everyone who campaigned, voted in, or otherwise supported the REC elections in February. Congratulations to the incoming President Shayla Breen, Vice-President Academic Nathan Lawley, Vice-President External Luc Carels, and Vice-President Student Affairs Kainat Javed. We look forward to working with you during transition!

President – Andrew Nguyen

Last month we continued our work to engage students in pledging to vote in the upcoming election—stay tuned for our GOTV booths on Main Street and other events! We also hosted our second Town Hall featuring the SAMRU Representation Executive Council—if you have any other questions you wanted to ask, please reach out and contact us. I am continuing to advocate to the University and to the City on increasing campus access through public transit; this will primarily affect route changes in the launch of the South West Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

Vice-President Academic – Cordelia Snowdon

Thank you to everyone who came to our second annual #MRUOERdays OER Fair! It was a great opportunity to connect with students and promote open education. As a result of our January OER Advocacy letter writing campaign, we also heard back from the Minister of Advanced Education regarding the Government’s willingness to work with students on how to implement a more effective development process for OER materials. In addition to ongoing OER advocacy, I will be continuing my advocacy to have the Student Perception of Teaching survey open for more courses, and welcome student feedback on the SPoT.

Vice-President External – Amanda LeBlanc

Happy spring, MRU students! Over my term, I have been lucky to be able to work on a variety of projects, from the Student Refugee Program (SRP) to the Tuition Campaign. I was also inspired to see many students vote in favour of the SRP in this year’s plebiscite. Let’s keep that energy going as we inch closer to our upcoming provincial election. Students have a powerful voice in Alberta, and we can really make a difference in the election. You can pledge to vote at and help amplify the student voice in Alberta!

Vice-President Student Affairs – Shayla Breen

As we head into the final stretch of our term, I want to extend a warm thank you to everyone that voted in the REC 2019/2020 Elections. I am honoured to start my term as the incoming SAMRU President in May. This is an exciting time for me as I work hard to wrap up my current position and transition our incoming REC team! I am looking forward to working with my new team; however, I will be very sad to see the current team move on. Thank you to everyone for such an incredible month!
