Any full-time Mount Royal University credit student who is over 18 and has a GPA of 2.5 or above is encouraged to apply.

What if I am a first-year and don't yet have a GPA?
First-year students who don't yet know their GPA can still apply. Just answer "yes" to the GPA eligibility question.

Representation Executive Council (REC) members are full-time employees for one year, with an expectation to work at least 35 hours per week.

The terms run from April 24, 2026 to April 30, 2027. REC members are expected to take at least one credit course per semester; the tuition for the required course is covered by SAMRU.

In addition to a salary of $49,500/ year, benefits of working as a SAMRU REC member include:

Acting with delegated authority from the board, the Representation Executive Council (REC) is expected to represent students’ interests to the university, government, external organizations, and the media. REC members serve on and actively participate in the following:

• MRU’s Board of Governors
• The General Faculty Council of Mount Royal University, and
• MRU committees and boards assigned annually through the REC

In addition, certain REC members will participate in external student advocacy organizations of which SAMRU is a member, including the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA), among others.

Representation and advocacy priorities
Each year, the Student Governing Board sets advocacy priorities for the Representation Executive Council. The REC then creates or updates positions on various issues connected to the Board's priorities.

The REC is expected to review existing REC advocacy position statements, develop new positions if necessary, and establish representation priorities for the year that will be reviewed and approved by the SAMRU's Student Governing Board.

On a daily basis, REC members attend many MRU committee and board meetings to present the student voice. They also advocate to various levels of government, and represent MRU students to external student advocacy groups and the media. To succeed in their roles, REC members review policy and research, discuss and agree on various approaches to advocacy, and network with other student leaders as well as MRU and government officials.

The Student Governing Board is responsible for developing criteria for each position, hiring the new REC members as SAMRU employees and then acting as the REC supervisor. Supervision involves overseeing REC's work, approving their priorities, and conducting their performance appraisals.
