Tax Clinic 

Need help filing your taxes? SAMRU offers a free tax clinic where trained student volunteers complete and file tax returns at no charge!

SAMRU’s free tax clinic program is over for 2026 but will return in 2027. If you are looking for a free tax service, you can visit the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program’s website, or email us at tax@samru.ca.

If you can't find an appointment in our calendar, it means we are fully booked until the end of the program. You can look for other free tax clinics in Calgary and/or Canada by visiting the Government of Canada website here.

We will not be implementing a waitlist. Thank you for your continued support of this program and we will look forward to serving you again next year.

Eligible clients for this service must meet the following criteria:

  • Individuals with an income of less than $40,000
  • Married/common-law couples with a combined income of with less than $55,000
  • Have a simple tax situation
In general, your tax situation is simple if you have no income or if your income comes from any of these sources:
  • Employment with modest income
  • Pension
  • Benefits such as the Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, disability insurance, employment insurance, and social assistance
  • Registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs)
  • Scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, or grants
  • Interest (under $1,200)

Your tax situation is not simple if you:

  • Are self-employed or have employment expenses
  • Have business or rental income and expenses
  • Have capital gains or losses
  • Own foreign property or have foreign income
  • Filed for bankruptcy in the tax year (or the year before, if that return has not yet been filed)
  • Are completing a tax return for a deceased person
  • Own foreign property

We cannot contact CRA on your behalf due to sensitivity issues with regards to client confidentiality. We also cannot answer complex tax questions.
