Food Support
With our needs-based food support programs, you’ll be able to focus less on where your next meal is coming from and more on your studies.
Food insecurity can be tightly linked with financial insecurity. See how SAMRU can help you succeed with one of our financial support programs.
Free Breakfast
A healthy breakfast is important for maintaining adequate brain function and energy levels throughout the day. Unfortunately, many students either skip or simply can’t afford a nutritious breakfast every day. The Peer Support Centre provides a free, nutritious breakfast to students who need it, to help kick start their day. From 8:45 am (until supplies last) Monday through Friday during the Fall and Winter semesters, fresh fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, bread, coffee, and more provide a simple and healthy foundation that makes learning possible all day long.
Care Cupboards
SAMRU Care Cupboards build on our existing food security programs by extending anonymous, convenient access to food and personal hygiene supplies.
Main Cupboard: Designed as a short-term solution, students can access the main Care Cupboard located in the Peer Support Centre a maximum of 3 times per month. Students are required to complete an online intake form, provide proof of enrollment, and select a pick up date and time. If you need longer-term assistance, we can help you access the Calgary Food Bank through our referral process.
Satellite Cupboards: The cupboards feature both refrigerated and non-perishable food storage, microwaves, and essential hygiene products. Cupboards and fridges are re-stocked 4 times a week. Students accessing the care cupboards are encouraged to take what is necessary, but to visit SAMRU’s Peer Support Centre for their broader support needs.
Food Bank Referral
The Peer Support Centre is a registered referral agency of the Calgary Food Bank, and hampers are available to all eligible individuals. Drop by the Peer Support Centre (Wyckham House, Z210) during our core hours to fill out an application form with one of our volunteers. Hampers can be picked up at the Food Bank by appointment.
