SAMRU Community Garden

The community garden initiative is a cooperation between SAMRU, MRU, and its surrounding communities, through the MRU Community Garden Steering Committee

The initiative began in 2010 when the Community Garden Association and partners on campus started working together to create a vision of sustainability through growth and gardening.

The community garden itself, located on the MRU campus in Student Residence East Court, is a unique space. Unlike most community gardens, which require a buy-in for a season and limit members to a single plot, the community garden is a communal endeavor; members are encouraged to treat it as their own garden. We kindly ask for people to apply first to volunteer, and once you are qualified to start, in return you’ll get to take home garden-fresh produce and greens. You’ll also have the chance to participate in collaborative projects like the ongoing horticultural therapy project. You might even have your own idea for a new initiative, and the community garden can help you make it happen. There’s no cost to getting involved, and there’s no limit to what you can do!

Working in the community garden is a great way to build your gardening skills, get to know great people, share tools and tips with experienced gardeners, and enjoy some fresh air.

The community garden is open throughout the summer and runs normally until the end of September. Seed planting begins in early February in the MRU greenhouse located near the east residence.
