Looking for some activities to do over the winter break, but don’t want to break the bank? Look no further! Here are some things to do that are fun and affordable!

1. Lions Festival of Lights

The Lions Festival of Lights is a free light display that takes place in Confederation Park along 14th street. Catch the lights every evening from 5:30 pm to midnight until January 7th.

2. Skating

There are a number of free skating rinks around the city – all you need is your skates! If you don’t have skates, some of the skating rinks offer rentals for an affordable cost. Check out all the locations!

3. Fish Creek Provincial Park

Fish Creek Provincial Park is a great place for winter activities! You can walk, snowshoe, or cross country ski (there are no equipment rentals so if you’re looking to snowshoe or ski, you’ll have to bring your own).

4. Grab a coffee and explore downtown

Grab a coffee with a friend and walk along the Bow river, down Stephen Ave, or escape the cold by exploring the Plus 15 network.

5. Studio Bell: Home of the National Music Centre

Take a day to check out the National Music Centre at Studio Bell! There are permanent and feature exhibits, performances, Canadian music halls of fame. For the month of December, admission is pay what you can. Take a look at their website for more information on hours, and take a virtual tour!

6. Go Sledding

Grab a sled and hit the slopes! There are a number of hills around Calgary that are great for sledding. No sled? Try using a garbage bag or piece of cardboard!

7. Volunteer in the Community

Meet new people and give back to the community by volunteering! Volunteering is a great way to keep yourself busy while making a difference. Check out some of the volunteer opportunities on Volunteer Calgary or Volunteer Connector to see if there’s something you may be interested in doing over the break (or continuing with after the break ends, too)! SAMRU also has volunteer opportunities available for the upcoming semester.
