February is Black History Month! The SAMRU Cultural Inclusion Centre and collaborators are hosting rich and engaging events highlighting the Black community and experiences of the Black diaspora.

Exploring Black Leadership

February 5th |  Online | 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

This dynamic panel discussion will explore the evolving landscape of Black leadership across Canada through the lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. It will also spotlight the innovation and collective impact of Black leaders across sectors. Beyond Borders for Cultural Competency: Nigeria

February 10th | IDEAS Lounge | 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm

Beyond Borders is a dynamic, curiosity driven cultural competency course designed to take participants on a journey across vibrant cultures from around the world. This month we will be exploring Nigeria, the most populous country on the continent of Africa. This effort will be led by Dr. Ademola Adesola, Yemi Adeyemi, Dr. Michael Uzoka, and Vivienne Momoh. The session will privilege attention to Nigerian history/culture/ influence within the sub-Saharan context, among other vital issues.

Black History Month Film Night

February 10th | Jenkins Theatre (I 115) | 4:30 pm – 7:20 pm

Come join the the East African Link club as they host a space for reflection, learning, and community dialogue through storytelling and film with a screening of “Boyz n the Hood”. Stay around for a facilitated discussion following the movie.

Taste of Afro-Caribbean Food

February 12th | Culture Inclusion Centre | 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

The African Caribbean Student Society is partnering with the Culture Inclusion Centre to host a special edition of International Eat & Greet. This edition of Eat & Greet will celebrate African and Caribbean culture through food. Come by, enjoy free samples from local Calgary restaurants, including jollof rice, Jamaican patties, puff puff, and more!

Beyond Borders for Cultural Competency: Jamaica

February 25th | IDEAS Lounge | 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm

Led by Dr. Marva Ferguson and Mr. David Pennant, this presentation explores Jamaica’s vibrant history and global influence through the lenses of culture, “song and dance,” and the resilience shown following Hurricane Melissa. The session will highlight iconic figures in fields ranging from health science to sports while showcasing the country’s role as a global hub for economic and social development. Attendees can expect an immersive experience featuring live poetry, historical artifacts, and traditional Jamaican cuisine

Rhythm & Reflection

February 25th | Council Chambers | 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Rhythm & Reflection: Arts, Music, and Mental Health is a Black History Month creative wellness workshop using music and art to support mental health. We’ll start with guided creative expression (no experience needed), then join a counsellor-led conversation to process, reflect, and take away practical coping tools. Come by, breathe, connect, and reset!

Hair Love & Care Workshops

March 5th | Lincoln Park Room (J301) | 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm

The Afro-Caribbean Club is putting on a workshop dedicated to the art of textured hair. Master the essentials of curly and coily hair maintenance and learn professional braiding techniques with extensions! The workshop will also feature local vendors and small businesses specializing in diverse hair care. Whether you’re looking to refine your routine or support the community, come celebrate the beauty of every strand!
