Meet Your New REC Team: Official Results From the 2023 REC Elections

The results are in! Every March, candidates for SAMRU’s Representation Executive Council (REC) are voted in by our members – MRU credit students. As employees of SAMRU’s Student Governing Board, the REC team is primarily responsible for advocating for students’ interests to MRU and all three levels of government.

In their time in the role, REC members get to meet and work alongside student representatives from across the country, and make a real difference in the day-to-day lives of MRU students! You can learn more about the roles of REC here.

All of the prospective candidates ran great campaigns across campus, and today we are pleased to announce the official results of the 2023 REC Elections!

Polls were open from March 13th to 16th, and in the end, over 800 students turned out to vote for their new student representatives. Here’s a breakdown of the votes:

REC President:
Joseph Nguyen: 500 votes (63.1%)
Andrea Ciaramella: 293 votes (36.9%)

REC Vice-President Academic:
Tala Abu Hayyaneh: 643 Yes (86.8%)

REC Vice-President Student Affairs:
Anisa Tilston: 597 Yes (81.8%)

Please note that SAMRU is currently hiring for the role of REC Vice-President External. This exciting role works closely with the other three members of REC, but has a special focus on public policy, government lobbying, media relations, and relationship-building with other student-led organizations.

Think you’d be a good fit for the role? You can find a job description and apply online here before the deadline of March 31st 2023 at 5:00 PM! If you have questions along the way, please reach out to governance@samru.ca.

We are excited to welcome Tala Abu Hayyaneh to the role of REC VP Academic, and Anisa Tilston to the role of REC VP Student Affairs. Both Tala and Anisa have been involved with SAMRU in a volunteer capacity for a number of years, and we couldn’t be happier to have them now advocating for students as members of REC.

Joseph Nguyen will be returning for a second term as REC President! Joseph is no stranger to REC; before serving as REC President of the 2022-2023 REC team, he also served as the REC Vice-President Student Affairs in the 2021-2022 term.

Thank you to everyone who came out to vote and please join us in extending a warm welcome to your 2023-2024 REC team.
